the light & the dark of bonsaiing

The Light - plant steriods: SUPERTHRIVE

The Dark - mealybug: THE WHITE PLAGUE

God curse the mealybug of which I found one whole 2mm body on my recovering olive tree this morning. I feel no remorse for my actions. With a sharp intake of breath I whipped that soft little body of evil pus off the bark and squashed it between my fingers. I will show no mercy to the mealybug and it's fleecy vileness. And it with it's death it will spawn no others.

I know those buggers well. It seems like nothing I pour onto them will do them in. In the end the deadly pinch does the trick.

it's the ONLY thing that works - meticulous hunting and picking out of the white devil

Do you have many Bonsai? At one time I had 40. But they slowly left me one by one. Now I only have about 15. Most of them Acacia.

The other day my dog chowed down one of my figs, so only the stem was left. We were not amused...

oh god that sounds like a nightmare revelation (the dog one). i had about 9 or so - when i left south africa i left with a guy i thought would look after them. when i came back only two were alive and most had died from lack of water. now i have 3 - 2 olives (one is on an extended loan) and a maple. i'm looking at getting a serrisa or a dalbergia again. busy training what i thought was a cape may but turns out to be some wierd unnamed vynbos

Luckily (is there such a word) i salvaged the bitten off branches, and am now trying to get them to root. The Ficus roots quite easy.

There are 2 Coral trees, 3 or 4 Ficus, and a few different Acacia.

I would love a maple. I tried some Cussonia, but the don't bonsai well, so I'm planning to plant them out. I want to go buy an oak at my nearby nursery (special bonsai seedlings for R25).

One day, when I'm all growed up, I would love some fruit ones as well. I think an apple or pear would make a lovely tree...
